Yoga Therapy for Back Pain and Spondylitis
Lower back pain can be debilitating, and discomfort caused by cervical and ankylosing spondylitis (AS) may be especially severe. 80% of the world’s population will experience back pain at some point in their lives. Conventional pain relief medications cause uncomfortable side effects- so that’s where yoga comes in! Yoga uses gentle stretching exercises to rectify damaging posture, relieving chronic pain and increasing spinal flexibility to reverse the disease.
Yoga also promotes relaxation and helps reduce anxiety. It may also calm your nervous system, reduce pain and fatigue, and help you cope with the emotional issues of dealing with a chronic illness.
Spine Warm Up and Surya Namaskar
It is important to release tension and knots that are stuck in the body. This can be achieved through prana breathing as well as body and mental flexibility. There should be an emphasis on opening up the heart, spine, and hips to release built up pain. These kinds of exercises provide freedom in mobility and help create space within our body and mind for positive energy. They also help blood flow through our system to detox the stagnant energy and build up momentum towards our goals. Some common practices include alternate nostril breathing (anulom vilom pranayama, surya namaskara, pawan muktasana, and more.
