Be it scientific research, climbing the Everest or winning medals at the Olympics, their stellar achievements made India proud. Following are 5 such remarkable Indian women among many others who left an everlasting mark on the world!
1. Kalpana Chawl
She was the first woman of Indian origin to go to space! Born into a poverty-stricken family, Kalpana was always inquisitive and loved stars. Her financial background could not stop her from being who she always wanted to be – an astronaut!
She first flew on Space Shuttle Columbia in 1997 as a mission specialist, and while re-entering into the Earth’s atmosphere, the Space Shuttle disintegrated, killing all the seven astronauts on board, including Kalpana. However, the legacy she left behind inspires young women from India and worldwide to take up a career in spaceflight.
2. Gita Gopinath
While we have mostly seen men, head notable organisations worldwide, Gita Gopinath is one of the few remarkable Indian women who was appointed as Chief Economist for the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
She is the first woman and second Indian to hold this position. Daughter of a farmer-entrepreneur, Gita completed her Ph.D. from Princeton University. She has also worked as an Assistant Professor at Harvard University and Chicago’s Graduate School of Business.
Her story will surely motivate and encourage many aspiring women entrepreneurs to follow their dreams.
3. Avani Chaturvedi
She stunned the world by flying a fighter jet solo! She is the first Indian female fighter pilot to make this history.
If you think it is not a big deal, you must know that it was not a common jet, it was the MiG-21 Bison, an aircraft with a take-off and landing speed of 340 kph, the highest in the world.

4. Dipa Karmakar
From Tripura, India, Dipa is the first Indian artistic gymnast to qualify for the Olympic final for her spectacular Produnova Vault. It is considered one of the hardest vaults in women’s artistic gymnastics.
As a child, she had a fear of falling, and it is wonderful to see what she has achieved only at the age of 24! She definitely inspires the women greatly to challenge their limits and conquer their fears and insecurities to make it big in sports.
5. Tessy Thomas
The Missile Woman of India, Tessy Thomas, is the trailer blazer in the field of science and technology in a usually male populated field.
Being the first woman to head the Indian missile project, Tessy was responsible for the successful launch of the Agni-V missile.
